The 5thPIPAC symposium on Sep 7th - 8th 2018 in Paris will focus on “understanding peritoneal metastasis”. Experiences from the past have shown that it is not enough to perform therapy-driven research in this deadly disease. Clearly, translational research including disease- and organ-focused research is urgently needed to improve therapeutic outcome of peritoneal metastasis.

This year’s symposium intends to bring together basic and clinical researchers from all over the world and from a broad range of disciplines to allow convergences and create synergies. Treating successfully peritoneal metastasis is a huge challenge and only joined efforts of the best actors in the field will allow significant progress.

Friday’s program will be devoted toPressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC)- a minimal invasive administration of aerosolized chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity, where the laws of physics allow a high tissue concentration of chemotherapy, but without the usual side effects and toxicity of systemic chemotherapy. Six Phase-II trials all show a significant efficacy of PIPACin peritoneal metastasis, with a confirmed low adverse events profile and with no occupational health safety problems. This could indicate treatment progress in a difficult palliative situation, but perhaps PIPACmay also challenge the present treatment strategies in cancer patients who have not reached end stage disease, yet. Breaking information on technology, pharmacology, running and future clinical trials will be presented to the worldwide surgical and gynecological oncology community.

Saturday will be the founding date of the International Society for the Study of Pleura and Peritoneum (ISSPP),a society opened to basic researchers and clinicians involved in the study of the organs pleura and peritoneum in health and disease. Scientific domains will include embryology, anatomy, physiology, immunology, pathology, clinical genetics, pharmacology, benign and malignant diseases and their therapies. The official journal of the Society will be the peer-reviewed, open-access journal “Pleura and Peritoneum” which has now entered successfully its 3rdyear of life. The call for founding members of the Society is now open. The same day, high-level meetings with companion organizations such as PSOGI and ESSO will be organized in order to develop common models of scientific collaboration and knowledge dissemination between the different actors in the field.

More information on the 5th PIPAC symposium and on the ISSPP is available at this homepage and will be updated regularly until and beyond the symposium. Be aware: only 140 participants can be allowed into the building, on the first-come first-serve basis.

We are looking forward to meet you soon in Paris for a stimulating and friendly meeting!
